Design Futuring: Mobility in Offenbach 2045 Students will learn and apply digital tools (VR & AI) to develop mobility visions, including storytelling. The task is to design well-founded mobility visions based on a mixture of scientific research and speculative ideas.

Research

This visualization concept is based in 3 technological trends:

Interfaces for an independent AI

Future AIs will interact independently with apps and predict patterns or behaviors based on personal context. This type of AI is being developed recently and will be commonplace in 2045. User interfaces will be designed either mostly for displaying content or for the AI agent.

Augmented reality

Augmented reality interfaces for displaying information and consuming content. Whether with glasses, implants, contact lenses, projectors, etc. The industry for such devices grows every year.

Smart cities / IoT

The proliferation of sensors and digital twins in the construction of cities and infrastructure. Cities are becoming smarter and more integrated every year, and advances in AI will drive this even further.

Concept

The goal of the visualization was to imagine the realitstic development of the cities of Offenbach and Frankfurt. The visualization story shows the journey of a person moving through public transportation with help of a futuristic OS. It was very important to avoid cliches in futristic developments of cities.

Contextual UI

JUBU's UI only appears when information is needed, and disappears when it isn't. The UI uses translucency to ground its elements in the real world and ensure user safety.

Non-intrusive Augmented Reality

JUBU is designed not to block the user's sight or overwhelm them. The UI does not follow the users eyes, it stays place in the real world. When the users needs something, they can, for example, use familar gesteurs like raise their hand to glance at information or open their hands to talk to JUBU's AI.

Realistic city development

In contrast to typical futuristic city visualizations, the enviroments shown are sometimes dirty and not that different from today.

Process

During the design process, an user journey was defined with a focus on mobility and demonstrating the concept. Testing was conducted using a Meta Quest Pro and an Apple Vision Pro. Visualisation renderings were created in Blender using self-made and free-licensed 3D assets.

Branding

The JUBU icon reflects its ephemeral nature, appearing only when needed. It conveys friendliness without personifying the AI.

Visualisation

This is the resulting video of the user journey.

Images

The final visualisation depicts the journey of a user from Offenbach to Frankfurt in the year 2045. It suggests a future of multimodal transport and smart cities. The visualisation also shows aspects of climate change.
